The European champion, who went into the final with the best time from the two semi-final heats finishing in 7:02.46, had a dream start to the final of his event on Friday 9/23. Nevertheless, with a mistake in tactics, Antonis Papaconstantinou saw the Italian, Gabriel Soares pass him in the last meters, as well as the Slovenian, Rajko Hrvat, whom he passed again to finally win the silver medal with 07:05.42.
A month and a half after winning the gold medal at the European Championships in Munich, the 23-year-old Greek rower was in contention for the gold medal for most of the 2,000 meters but eventually crossed the finish line second and settled for 2the position.
Switzerland’s Andri Struzina was unlucky as he overturned his boat, but he got back up and managed to finish.
