BELGIUM-.Mike Schumacher He declined several opportunities to discuss his F1 future on Thursday amid speculation he will leave Haas at the end of the season.

The son of the seven-time champion F1 Michael Schumacher He is in his second season at Haas, where he was promoted to the Ferrari Driver Academy. He has been associated with Ferrari since 2019 after winning the European F3 Championship.

Schumacher’s contract with the academy expires at the end of this year, and Ferrari’s engine partner Haas will not be obliged to retain the 23-year-old German if Schumacher is no longer part of the program.

In a press conference before the Dutch Grand Prix, Schumacher was asked if he plans to stay at Haas for a third season, if he is in talks with other teams and what he sees as the pros and cons of his situation.

He dodged all three questions.

“I’m focused on the professionals I’ll be racing with this weekend and next, and hopefully in Singapore and Suzuka and the next few races,” Schumacher said at Zandvoort. “I’m excited for this weekend, our car should be pretty strong and hopefully I can get some points.”

Schumacher was unfazed when asked directly if he wanted to talk about his plans for 2023 and ignored two other questions about his future.

“I think what is discussed between us behind the scenes stays between us and I prefer to leave it at that and not discuss it publicly,” he said.

Schumacher later said “these are contractual matters that I can’t go into detail about” when asked about his F1 future. If Haas doesn’t keep Schumacher for next season and the driver can’t find another seat, the grid will lose its two German drivers, with four-time champion Sebastian Vettel announcing his retirement in advance.

Haas team principal Gunther Steiner publicly warned Schumacher at the start of the season that he needed to improve his performance. He missed the second race of the season when he crashed in Saudi Arabia and was briefly taken to hospital for tests. Schumacher also crashed in Monaco.

He finally scored the first Formula One points of his career in July at the British Grand Prix, finishing eighth at Silverstone. In the next race in Austria, Schumacher took sixth place and scored 12 points. Kevin Magnussen, who returned to Haas this season after a one-year hiatus, leads the only American team in Formula 1 with 22 points.
