Ukraine does not have “strong communication” with China, but its help would be important – Zelenskyi

After the start of the major Russian invasion of Ukraine, there is no “strong communication” with China, although this country could help a lot to “force Russia to peace.” This was stated by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

“Before the large-scale invasion, there were channels of communication between our countries at various levels (and this is evidenced by the large trade between Ukraine and China). Unfortunately, we don’t have strong communication with China now. And I regret it, because I think this is a big economy, a big state, and it has a lot of political influence. And that’s why I would like him to be on our side,” Zelensky emphasized.

At the same time, he added that at the moment he is grateful to China at least for the fact that “it does not sell weapons to Russia”.

“We see China taking a balancing position. But I would love to help Ukraine. I’d love. Although I will say frankly: from the fact that they are not sending weapons to Russia, they are already helping,” noted the Ukrainian president.

China has so far refused to directly condemn Russia’s attack on Ukraine, while increasing bilateral trade amid Western sanctions.

The White House on September 15 urged China not to support Moscow in its war against Ukraine, saying all countries should be united against Russian aggression in Ukraine and not stand aside.

On September 16, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Uzbekistan. It was their first meeting since the start in Ukraine.

Xi Jinping said China is ready “together with Russia to assume the role of major powers and play a leading role in bringing stability and positive energy to the world.” He also noted that he appreciates “Russia’s commitment to the one-China principle.” Instead, he did not mention Ukraine.

On September 23, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in China, Wang Yi, to discuss bilateral relations between the countries. According to the Ukrainian minister, his Chinese counterpart “confirmed China’s respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
