The Ministry of Defense of Great Britain, citing British intelligence, suggests that the mobilization in the Russian Federation may be used to reinforce the units of the Russian Guard with additional forces.
“On September 21, 2022, a well-known Russian nationalist, member of the State Duma Oleksandr Khinshtein called for the partial mobilization of the Russian army to be extended to the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardiya). “Russian guard units have played an important role both in hostilities and in ensuring the security of the rear in Ukraine and are currently helping to hold ‘referendums’ on joining the occupied territories,” the message reads.
British intelligence adds: “These forces (Rosgvardii – ed.) are intended to perform internal security functions to ensure the continuity of the Putin regime. They were particularly ill-prepared for the intense battles they fought in Ukraine. In view of the requirement to suppress the growth of internal dissent in Russia, as well as the implementation of operational tasks in Ukraine, the Russian garrison is likely to be under particular pressure. There is a real possibility that the mobilization will be used to reinforce Rosgvardia units with additional manpower.”
On the morning of September 21, the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, announced to the country “in connection with the situation in Ukraine.” He stated that citizens who are in the reserve will be drafted. First of all, we are talking about those who served in the ranks of the armed forces, and also have certain military accounting specialties and experience.
However, numerous testimonies and videos shared by Russians on the Internet show that people with no military experience and who violate other requirements for joining the military are being mobilized.
Mobilization in the Russian Federation has caused a mass exodus of Russians who may be drafted into the army, as well as relatively few protests in major cities, which have been violently dispersed by security forces.
